The project revised plan aimed at creating awareness on impact of COVID 19 on women and
children with emphasis on Violence against Women and Children (VAWC). The designed
work plan focused on Kinondoni municipality areas of Tandale and Mwananyamala.
Awareness messages were delivered through local and digital media as well as on the street
campaigns. Use of innovative media such as social media was very useful in reaching out to
large numbers of people during the COVID pandemic.
TIBA created Covid19 and Gender Based Violence messages and participated in media
programs to reach out to communities with no access to digital media. Our followers and post
likes increased and we obtained administrative support in the form of office equipment that has
been used for advancement of TIBA programs.
We engaged with journalists who published our campaigns including case studies from the
communities that showed the existence of Gender based violence during pandemic. The stories
were covered by 11 journalists and they featured on radio, TV, social media and in newspapers.
TIBA was also able to partner with the government and in turn this enabled us to foster cordial
relationships with local government authorities. Through these partnerships TIBA raised
awareness on the impact of COVID 19 on Gender Based violence in respect of women and
children in the identified areas of Tandale -Pakacha , Kwa Tumbo and Sokoni,
Mwananyamala –Msisiri ,Kopa and Bwawani. The project contributed to the implementation
of the National Plan of Action (NPA) to end VAWC through creating community awareness
and engaging men and boys who are among the identified implementation gap groups in the
NPA. It also linked a number of stakeholders including media, civil society, communities and
government to fight for the cause of ending VAWC, and it contributed to the implementation
of sustainable development goal no 5 – Gender Equality that has been hugely affected during
pandemic due to the fact that women’s’ economic gains reduced during the pandemic. This
affected their health and social welfare at individual level. Furthermore at national and regional
level commitments such as SADC Gender Protocol, Maputo protocol, Africa agenda 2063 and
Beijing 25 + progress that the country is closely monitoring will be negatively impacted.
