These women lack association that brings them together and have a same voice .During the end of the training one of the way forward were to form groups in each ward that participated in the training, leaders were selected and a total of 300 other women have joined in the group in all 10 wards such as Kijitonyama, Kigogo, bunju, mbezi, Mbweni, Mabwepande, Kibamba ,Kawe,Makumbusho and Wazo.
This joint effort has led to numerous positive impacts, both socially and economically, as these women have risen above the challenges that come with urban farming and vending. Through monitoring and evaluation activity, our organization has witnessed the transformative power of these women, which not only contribute to food security but also foster women empowerment, community development, and sustainable urban agriculture.
TIBA is aiming to enhance food security, one of the most significant impacts of these groups is the enhancement of food security in urban areas. As urbanization accelerates, traditional agricultural practices often take a backseat to urban development. However, the determination of small-scale women farmers and vendors to utilize even the smallest spaces, such as rooftops and balconies, for farming has resulted in a steady supply of fresh, locally-grown vegetables to urban communities
Furthermore , this group has promoted women empowerment, the formation of these groups will provide a platform for women to collaborate, share knowledge, and support each other in their entrepreneurial endeavors. As they work together towards common goals, these women have been able to access resources and training that empower them as both farmers and vendors. By taking leadership roles in their groups, women have gained self-confidence and a sense of purpose, challenging traditional gender roles prevalent in many urban settings
Moreover, strengthening community bonds, beyond the individual benefits, these women groups have fostered strong community bonds. By working together and pooling resources, they can create a supportive network that extends beyond the realm of farming and vending. The sense of trust among the women will facilitate knowledge exchange, improved negotiation skills, and encouraged sustainable agricultural practices. As these groups interact and collaborate with other community organizations, they can become active participants in national development.
In addition, these groups will promote sustainable urban agriculture, the small-scale nature of these initiatives often means a focus on financial solutions, organic farming and sustainable practices. Without the financial capacity for large-scale chemical inputs, these women rely on environmentally friendly methods such as composting, crop rotation, and natural pest control. As a result, they contribute to the greening of urban spaces and set an example for others to follow..
Conclusively, the positive impact of small-scale women vegetable farmers and vendors in urban areas is undeniable. Through the power of collective action and collaboration, these women have brought about significant changes in their communities. From enhancing food security and empowering women to strengthening community bonds and promoting sustainable urban agriculture, their initiatives set a remarkable example for urban development worldwide.
As organizations and policymakers recognize the value of these women groups’ efforts, providing additional support and resources can further amplify their positive impact. By empowering small-scale women vegetable farmers and vendors, we not only foster a sustainable and resilient urban food system but also contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society.
