Dear reader, welcome to our story and today we want to ask ourselves this question. Is philanthropy the next big thing in the social sector? In this case we specify to non-government organizations. While you are trying think about it here is our take on the matter. Philanthropy involves the act of giving and it is still a new topic for many people, in fact some will make you believe it’s only for the few members of the community including rich and educated people.
We are here to tell you that Philanthropy is not something new in our community the truth is it has been done by our fore parents over decades unknowingly. For example in Tanzania we have been raised in communalism community where giving is a way of life hence sharing ,unity and support from one another is normal in many families .We have been tapping our resources to support people in need whether human resource, financial or technical something that has been solving our challenges and elevating community, it has been that way for a long time and sometimes we have been supporting social projects like building bridges, school classrooms or support orphans with school fees.
Additionally, progress and sustainability of social sector especially non-government organizations has been coming from external donors who support different initiatives and projects that eliminates our existing challenges such as diseases, climate change, education the list could go on, but after covid-19 crisis the support hasn’t been so accessible like before .This has made major changes especially financially most organizations are currently use different ways of fundraising so as they can be able to support projects and improve the lives of their beneficiaries .For example they conduct fundraising events like product exhibitions from local producer, marathon challenges, alumni contributions and so many whereby important stakeholders in the community are invited in the events for influencing and also for contribution purpose.
However, this has brought this question today,is philanthropy the next big thing in the sector? .I think the reason we think it is can be contributed by the fact that most people considers philanthropy expensive and only for the few something which is not true ,this is why it is important for us as a community to give philanthropy a chance so as we can see it uplift the social sector especially in this time of change where the world is still healing from covid-19 crisis that has affect the economy of the world. Organizations should invest in the power of storytelling that’s where community can come in and be motivated to give for the good of our community
